.. and there aren't many campers about! Still I spotted the red one from the train window on my way to work this morning and I did see one in a Caerphilly car park at the weekend. But otherwise, there just aren't that many around!

I'm a big fan of Coronation Street so I thought it would take something pretty big for me to get distracted by the goings-on of my mates in Weatherfield. In fact all it took was an ornamental camper van!

The classic VW camper van is a beautiful thing. So when I see a rather less beautiful image of a camper van on accessories then I'm one disappointed camper van fan.

Last weekend the official event to celebrate 60 years of Volkswagen vans held in Hanover, Germany attracted 71,000 visitors with an amazing selection of over 5,000 Transporter vans and campers – from the original ‘split-screen’ T1 to today’s fifth-generation models.

Building your own (mini version)

Spotted this:

Build Your Own VW Bus is in the traditional of those old model kits, but with a bit more cool. Available in blue or red, you get all the small pieces (plus screwdriver and instructions) that will undoubtedly test your patience as the nights draw in. But if you have the time and an eye for detail, you'll be rewarded with a working model featuring a die-cast metal body, opening doors, pull back and go motor, bolts, lights and dashboards. And the feeling of pride that comes with a job well done.

Available online, you can pick one up for £7.99.

To see it for yourself click here. It's sandwiched between the handmade shoes and Jeeves and Wooster lighting.

Dan's the man

Had a comment on a previous post from a certain Dan who's restoring an old camper. Hats off to anyone who has a go I say!

After reading his comment I took another look at Camper Van Crisis, the TV programme I'd spotted. Nigel Isted's accounts of restoring a camper is a bit out of date now, but still worth a look

I've been spotting campers all over the TV lately. Jamie (pukka tukka) Oliver has one (the one he took to Italy) lurking in the background in the outside shots of his latest TV Show: Jamie at home (or whatever it's called). I also spotted some great ones in a film: Almost Famous, set in the 60s. No pix of the campers but you can't have everything!
